On the Chance directory of a bullet

P1030294

How do I put into words the stories I have gathered in just one day let alone the three weeks I have already been here. Yesterday was a joint ceremony with The British Memorial Association Fromelles meeting relatives who are only here on the chance directory of a bullet. Scottish, English, Irish, French – so many individual stories. A hug from an elderly Scottish man whose grandfather was lost in the war. So much emotion. The service for the fallen. The wonderful wonderful Poppies Concert at Fromelles and the Wadsworth Brass Band which did a version of Bohemian Rhapsody that Freddie Mercury would be proud of – right beside Its long way to Tipperary and Sussex by the Sea – in the most amazing church with outstanding acoustics. To Mayor Jean-Gabriel thank you so much for inviting me to be part of this amazing experience. To Hubert and Theresa – Thank you for your amazing kindness and hospitality xxx and to the French man who came up to me after the service at cobbers – I will always be grateful for the gift.  Thank you xxx

Armistice Day in Fromelles

P1030213 P1030214 Yesterday the sun was shining on a small but passionate ceremony held at the Memorial in front of the Church at Fromelles.  A joint ceremony with The British Memorial Association Fromelles, there was a wonderful exhibition at the hall afterwards.  I was talking with Ms Victoria Burbidge is the British representative and a fountain of knowledge on the  Battle of Auber’s Ridge. There was an interesting display of artefacts found around Fromelles and I was so lucky to see up close one of the poppies from the exhibition at the Tower of London.P1030228 P1030217 So many pictures of soldiers – someone’s son, father, brother, Uncle, friend – SO many names. Pheasant from Pheasant Wood

P1030187

can you see him between the middle posts – yes a real life pheasant from Pheasant Wood who came out to say hello.

Also a huge thank you to Jean Gabriel Masson and his family for their hospitality and letting me stay at their home for the last few days.  It has been wonderful and I especially loved Jersey, Cotton and Bamboo the three cats who were so beautiful.  I am loving Fromelles.

Aussie Aussie Aussies Oi Oi Oi

P1030169 P1030170 P1030172 P1030175 P1030176

Oh what a lovely day today.  A bus tour of Aussies www.backroadstouring.com (and a Kiwi in there I suspect)  came to decorate some crosses.  I found out that some people were knitting poppies on cruise ships coming over to Gallipoli.  There are lots of knitted poppies  everywhere here at the moment especially at the commemorative services.  So I had a good old Aussie chat with a great bunch of people.  Thanks Nic, Tony and Co for stopping by and helping with my project.  Safe onward journey.

France – Australia – Shared Friendships

P1030164 P1030165

Forever joined as allies through the events of 1914 to 1915, France and Australia have a shared history.  This cross by Hubert is in commemoration of our shared history and a blessing for continued friendships between our two communities.

Known Unto God

“Known Unto God” There is some comfort in these words as they are now written on numerous headstones throughout France where in the First World War it was impossible to identify the millions of dead in the battlefields on France.  Whilst doing research for my project Once Lost, Never Forgotten  I have discovered that the words were chosen by the English Poet Rudyard Kipling who lost a son in the early years of the War and was appointed to the Imperial War Graves Commission as a literary advisor. He also chose the words for Lutyen’s Stone Of Remembrance – “Their Name Liveth For Evermore”. Research is from the book ‘Remembering Fromelles”‘ CWGC Publishing.

Colour in my day

Today I added some underglaze colour to poppies.  It is always an unknown when working with different clay but we shall see.

And the plaster slabs supplied by Jean Pierre are working well to dry out the clay.

Tour De France

Some more crosses were being made today for a memorial garden in Fromelles.  Jerry is part of a Tour De France Bicycling group on his way to Belgium.  (I hope I understood this correctly) Thanks for stopping in and playing with clay today. Jerry’s cross had a poppy and the stars of the southern cross adorned on it. I am looking forward to seeing more visitors at the Studio soon.

Mullumbimby after the rain

This picture is by Mullumbimby artist John Walters.  It has been raining and flooding near Mullumbimby Australia which is my home town.  But apparently the sun is out now so I thought I would show my Fromelles friends a picture of where I come from.

magic of mullumbimby
