Out and about in Northern Rivers

Northern Rivers is full of exciting artistic inspiration.  I took a break from my clay yesterday to drop off my entry for Coraki Art Exhibition. Coraki  “meeting of the waters” is situated at the junction of the Richmond and Wilson Rivers.  A quiet and welcoming spot rich in history and cultural it was a pleasure to visit Coraki and good luck to all the artists.

Then it was off to Serpentine Gallery in Lismore who are preparing for their next exhibition Tattoos, Textures and Textiles which opens on 2 November.

Lismore Regional Gallery was preparing for exhibitions opening on the weekend – Shaun Gladwell, Kate Maurice, Miriam Salomon.  Afghanistan: Shaun Gladwell 27 October – 9 December, 2012. Galleries 2 and 3 will be one exhibition I will be reviewing with interest. I can’t wait.

Going home via Ballina I had the pleasure of seeing a pop up Gallery in River St Ballina featuring the stunning work of Jacqueline King and Kim Toft.

The Northern Rivers Gallery at Ballina will be exhibiting the work of Cassandra Purdon on 2 November – more details  later – but this will be one not to miss.

and speaking of something not be be missed – Mud Colony! I’m on my way. http://mudcolony.blogspot.com.au/

Friends with the Tweed Regional Gallery and Curating the Cube

I enjoyed a wonderful welcome from the Friends of the Tweed Regional Art Gallery on Thursday morning. Thank you to everyone for the warm and friendly welcome.  For $10 we became Friends of the Gallery and got to find out lots of interesting facts behind the scenes.  The tour of the collection (not on display) was amazing.  Morning tea was delicious.  And as a Friend we get all sorts of invitations, newsletters and fascinating news.  I cant’ wait.  The Margaret Olley exhibition will be coming (not sure when) so stay tuned.

www.tweed.nsw.gov.au/artgallery

Enjoying my time in the studio, I have been working on my baby banksia’s and they are coming along nicely. Sneaky peek.

And more exciting news –

I am now the Curator of the Cube – The smallest Gallery in Byron Shire promoting art in the local area.  If you are in Mullumbimby walk past the Byron Shire Council Chamber and you can see the CUBE from the outside – or even better venture inside for a close up look at some great art work.  You can also check out the Cube’s FB page  https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-art-CUBE/130047750476165?ref=hl

And if you are in Mullum dont forget to visit Art Piece Gallery in the main street.  There is a whole world of wondrous art just waiting to be taken home.

And speaking of wonder, I wonder what everyone is up to at Mud Colony – Think I’ll check it out

Happy clay days everyone

It’s getting busy now.  I have had a few opportunities that I will be able to let you in on in the coming weeks.  Both local and international. My ANU studies are fast approaching their deadline with all my assessments having to be written up and posted by 7 November.

SO its Banksia’s to the grindstone – or rather my nose and clay fingers to the grindstone.

For anyone considering going overseas next year – why not consider these two gems – you never know who you will meet at workshops and conferences.

Oh What a week it was

Well what a week it was – Adelaide Ceramics Triennial – was fantastically informative, thought provoking and just down right inspirational.

Penny Byrne enthralled us all with her subversive ceramic sculptures.  I was particularly thrilled because she had pictures of her new exhibition Iprotest.  Penny’s attention to detail in the manipulation and alteration of old ceramic figurines creates powerful messages and stunning art works.  You can see more of her work at http://www.visualarts.net.au/gallery/pennb

And the one and only Vipoo stole the show with his presentation. You can see more of Vipoo’s sensational work at http://www.vipoo.com/gallery.htm

There have been lots of pictures on the internet of the major exhibitions so i will just include a few fav pics

and at the South Australian Art Gallery – one of my favorite pieces by Stephen Bowers.  As you all know i am a lustre fanatic so I was also thrilled to see some pieces by William De Morgan with some nice ruby lustre.

I could keep posting pictures but for now I will sign off and try to post some more info and details about my time at the conference as I get time.

Back to my studio to make more works. Happy clay days everyone

and dont forget to check out Mud Colony this week – It is sure to be fantastic with all the goings on – clay, ceramic and pottery good times.

TAFE Funding to be cut – Please sign if you care about the arts

Please sign http://www.communityrun.org/petitions/fund-art-education-in-nsw-tafe

“On September 11 the NSW government announced that it would stop funding art education in TAFE, leaving 4000 students without access to finishing their courses in 2013. TAFE Art courses are the main provider of art education in NSW, with many prominent artists getting their first ‘hands on’ training in TAFE. The withdrawal of funding will mean that only the wealthy will be able to afford private art education and NSW will suddenly find it no longer has emerging artists with skills coming through.”

“The cultural sector is an economic force, contributing over $30 billion to Australia each year – the arts not only create jobs but also create communities that are more vibrant, cohesive, healthy and innovative. TAFE in NSW puts the ability to make art in the hands of people, without regard to their age, wealth or background. TAFE provides hands on training that develops the skills necessary for artists to succeed. TAFE art students go on to work in many art roles across other industries – in museums and galleries, in community health and local government, in entertainment and hospitality industries. Many of them set up small businesses teaching, producing and selling their art. We undersigned petitioners therefore call on the Legislative Assembly, the NSW Premier, the Minister for Education and the Minister for Arts to recognise the value of TAFE arts education to NSW and to ensure it continues to be funded at viable levels that makes it accessible to all.”

If you care please write to your local members, state members and Ministers.

Going Inside History and Happily Slip Trailing this week

University gives me a lot of different avenues to explore for assignments and I have had a stroll down historical alley this year.

My first issue of Inside History Magazine arrived this week – and I am loving it. Its full of info on researching family trees. Its a wedding issue this quarter and has some great tips on digital tools.

While usually a Ceramic Artist I have been working on an assemblage in relation to a relative who died at the young age of 19 in World War 1. It seemed even more poignant with the loss of five Australian soldiers in Afghanistan this week. My heart goes out to their families. Here is a sneak peek of some of the memories I am capturing in my tribute “Discovering Ernest”

And as always ceramics takes up a large part of my time. I have been doing some throwing lately and have been experimenting with slip trailing. It is very meditative but a helpful hint – It is important to get the consistency right. Too thin and it slides all over the pot – Too thick and it clogs up in the sliptrailer. But it’s fun to have a go at it.

And don’t forget to check out Mud Colony this week – You never know what they are up to.

Happy clay days everyone
